    Phosphorus

Phosphorus. Used in large quantities by aquatic plants, Phosphorus is one of the three main nutrients (called macro nutrients) central to plant growth. It is usable by aquatic plants in the form of Phosphate.

Phosphorus is a component of nucleic acids and adenosine triphosphate, which are involved in the vital process of enzyme synthesis and energy transfer. Its compounds play a basic role in the mechanisms of photosynthesis which is essential for plant growth. Phosphorus is released by decaying waste, food and plant rests but often in amounts that are insufficient for planted aquariums, with supplementation via fertiliser usually required.  Phosphorus is often in short supply in planted aquariums and frequently overlooked. It has been inaccurately thought to cause algae. In reality, it is often the least available macronutrient, making it decisive for the amount of biomass produced.
